Claim A: New Coke was secretly a rebranded batch of Pepsi's own formula that Coca-Cola purchased in a covert deal. Claim B: Coca-Cola pulled New Coke off shelves after just 79 days thanks to a furious public backlash. Claim B is the true one — Claim A never happened.
In April 1985, Coca-Cola swapped its 99-year-old recipe for a sweeter formula, convinced it had a winner after extensive taste tests. Instead, it triggered one of the biggest consumer revolts in American business history. Loyalists felt like something had been stolen from them, and they made sure everyone knew it.
The company set up a hotline expecting a trickle of comments. Instead it received an avalanche — reportedly over 400,000 calls and letters in a matter of weeks, many addressed like personal grievances rather than product feedback.
One Seattle man became a minor legend by calling the hotline nearly every single day, always identifying himself the same dramatic way before launching into his complaint. Protest groups formed, bumper stickers appeared, and hoarders started stockpiling old-formula Coke like it was about to vanish forever.
By July 1985, just 79 days after the launch, Coca-Cola caved and brought back the original formula as "Coca-Cola Classic," running it alongside New Coke on shelves. Sales of Classic exploded, and many insiders later suspected the entire fiasco accidentally reminded America how much it loved the original taste.
As for Claim B — no, Coca-Cola never bought or repackaged Pepsi's formula. New Coke's recipe was developed entirely in-house, and the whole point of the disaster was that it tasted different from classic Coke, not suspiciously like the competition.
