Claim A says Golden Girls cast ate about 100 cheesecakes on the show. Claim B says Golden Girls crews baked every cheesecake on set each week. Claim A is true, and Claim B is completely made up.
Over the show's seven-year run, Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche and Rose dug into around 100 cheesecakes, and every one came from a single pastry chef: George Geary.
Geary was in his 20s, managing the bakery department of a Hollywood Safeway near Paramount Studios, when he was first tapped to make a wedding cake for the pilot. Cakes soon began turning up in scripts, and he became the show's go-to baker.
Each Friday-night taping, the prop department ordered seven identical cheesecakes. Geary wasn't there during filming, so the extras were insurance in case a scene needed multiple takes. The cakes went into the set's working refrigerator, and leftovers were shared among the cast and crew.
Even Dorothy kept score. In the episode "Golden Moments," she asks how many problems they've solved over cheesecake at the kitchen table, and when Rose wants an exact number, Dorothy snaps, "147, Rose!" That's a count of problems, not cakes, but it's right in line with the show's real cheesecake habit. Geary has never officially counted, so "around 100" is an estimate.
One cast member skipped the fun: Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy, reportedly never ate a single slice.
As for the false claim, the cheesecakes weren't baked on set by the crew. They were made by Geary and delivered to the stage, where the prop department stored them in the fridge.
