Why Did United Flight 1681 Turn Around? A Passenger Was Texting About Hijacking the Plane

Saturday night, 10:51 p.m. United Airlines Flight 1681 departs Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport, bound for Newark. 150 passengers. Six crew members.

Fifty-one minutes later, the plane is back on the ground in Las Vegas.

Here's what happened in between.

A flight attendant was walking through the cabin when she glanced at a passenger's phone. She saw what he was texting. She didn't say a word to him. She walked to the cockpit.

The pilot got on with air traffic control.

"The flight attendant saw him texting that he was going to hijack the aircraft. They called me. We went into lockdown, and we returned to Vegas."

The controller asked whether the passenger was cooperative or under restraint.

"He's unaware," the pilot said.

The man with the hijacking texts on his phone had no idea anyone had seen them.

What the Crew Did Right

This is a textbook example of aviation security response — and it's worth understanding why.

The flight attendant made a specific and correct decision: she did not confront the passenger. She did not ask him about the texts. She did not create a scene. She left him exactly where he was, with no indication that anything had changed, and she took the information directly to the pilot.

That decision — to not tip off a potential threat — kept 150 people safe. If the passenger had intended to act on the texts, confronting him mid-flight would have been the worst possible intervention. Instead, the crew locked the cockpit, alerted air traffic control, and began the return to Las Vegas with the man still sitting in his seat, unaware that the flight was turning around because of him.

The plane landed at 11:42 p.m. All 156 people on board were removed. The aircraft and everyone on it underwent comprehensive security inspection. No injuries were reported.

Who Was Arrested and What Happens Next

Dante Milne, 25, was arrested at Harry Reid International Airport upon landing. He was charged with making a threat or conveying false information regarding an act of terrorism — a federal charge. He posted $10,000 bail and was released. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 27.

The FAA is conducting its own investigation. The Las Vegas Metro Police Department is cooperating. United Airlines confirmed the flight "safely returned to Las Vegas to address a potential security concern" and said nothing further publicly.

What "making a threat regarding an act of terrorism" means legally: even if the passenger's texts were intended as a joke, venting, or anything other than a genuine plan — the act of texting about hijacking an aircraft in a public space where it can be observed constitutes a criminal offense under federal law.** There is no "just kidding" defense. You are on a plane. The texts are visible. Someone sees them. The consequences are federal.

The Cockpit Audio That's Going Around

The exchange between the pilot and air traffic control has been circulating since the story broke. It's 30 seconds long and worth listening to for what it isn't — panicked, chaotic, or uncertain.

The pilot is matter-of-fact. He explains the situation in two sentences. The controller asks a clarifying question. The pilot answers it. The plane continues its return to Las Vegas.

"We went into lockdown, and we returned to Vegas."

That's it. That's the whole thing. 150 people on a plane, a text message visible to one flight attendant, a pilot who handled it in 30 seconds, and a man who is now facing a federal terrorism charge because someone saw his phone.

What This Tells You About Flying in 2026

This is the third major American commercial aviation passenger incident we've covered in the past two weeks. A woman stripped naked on a Baltimore-to-Miami flight. A different woman allegedly pleasured herself and told police she was asleep. And now a man texted about hijacking his flight — apparently without considering that flight attendants walk the cabin.

The common thread: people continue to behave on aircraft as if the rules of public space don't apply at altitude.

The flight attendant who spotted that text is the reason everyone on Flight 1681 landed safely in Las Vegas at 11:42 p.m. instead of wherever the passenger's texts were going.
